It is getting harder and harder to download YouTube videos. I'm thinking about adding an extension to Chrome or Firefox that makes the downloading process relatively easy. Does anyone recommend a particular extension that can download most YouTube videos?

I've had the Video DownloadHelper add-on on my Firefox browser since the dawn of time, but I've had a few fails and other issues (big-ass barcode) crop up lately on some attempts.

More recently, I've been using the "4K Video Downloader" freeware (program) to grab some language-learning videos, and I've been happy with it. Although I'm not using it regularly.

Could you elaborate? What is this?

I'll try this one. I think YouTube videos have become more difficult to download and finding a temporary online download page, where you simply put in the URL and the video gets downloaded is now nearly impossible for certain videos.

Edit: couldn't download it, my virus protections blocked it. For now, I'll stick with looking for an extension.

I have been using the Torch browser which has a built in video downloader. It usually works for YouTube videos. The Torch screen recently has been getting cluttered with a lot of advertisements though so I have gone back to Firefox for general browsing and switch to Torch for video or .mp3 downloads.

I've never heard of the Torch browser, but I may try this.

I downloaded a Chrome extension called, "YouTube Video Downloader" and it did work for one of the videos I wanted to download.

Maybe check out :
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefo ... -download/
It is an approved Firefox AddOn with good ratings

NOT all addons for Firefox are actually "safety" approved or vetted by Mozilla
just FYI

I am on a MacOS system so versions / addons may vary if you are on WinDoze

let us know how it shakes out for you !

It's a programme, you have to download it and run from command line but it works very well with a lot of websites, not only youtube.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but only because it hasn't been mentioned, there are sites that will do this for you with no install, no registration, nothing but putting in the url and hitting the download button. This is one example, but there are tons if you do a Google search for "youtube to mp4", which seems to be the key term to get these types of things rather than the programs, which is most of what comes up when using a search term like "youtube download".

I don't know much about this but if you want hassle-free download from any platform then you can try using Fabnor, an online video downloader, to download any video from the internet instantly for free Enter the video URL and click the download button

Well, my problem has been that I need subtitles or closed captions.
Even with hearing aids, human speech is tricky. You can miss whole chunks of it.
I found a couple of programs that work well for this, downloading in HQ, with subtitles.
They cost money, but not a lot.
4K downloader has already been mentioned, but are also: Allavsoft, Flixgrab, and if you research it, several others.
Ultimately, I decided their reliability made it work the bucks.

Youtube dl [Gui] was mentioned above, and he last time I checked it it wrked well for me.

Otherwise, I search for 'download youtube video' and always find a site that downloads the video fr me.
It is more difficult if the video is not available to the public due to age restrictions (which are quite an overkill in many cases), but some sites can handle even such videos. And then it is easy to download them from those 3rd party sites. It may happen that what works today will ot work tomorrow and vce versa.

I am personally not aware of malware that I would have downloaded, but I nevertheless advice you to be careful and be aware that there are potential risks.

I should have been more explicit on my last message: Some sites enable you to download age restricted videos from Youtube even if you are not registered or not logged in at youtube. I mention this because it might be interesting for provacy aware users.

I use Jdownloader for a lot of stuff, and pasting in a YouTube link allows me to choose the quality or just the audio etc. So I recommend that!
